Kate and Harry met in Austin, Texas in 2015 at a Halloween party while in their freshman year at the University of Texas. Harry, an enthusiastic geology student, appreciated Kate’s ability to hold a conversation about rocks. While Kate certainly seemed interested in Harry, he was after all talking about rocks at a Halloween party. Friends first it was.
By November 2017, Kate and Harry had begun going on dates together where they discovered that they had many things in common, and, most importantly, they found unique qualities they would grow to love about one another. And so, on a crisp night after a dinner in downtown Austin while atop a parking garage overlooking Lady Bird Lake and the Austin skyline, Harry asked Kate to be his girlfriend.
The next 6 years would be an adventure for the two of them. In that time Kate would graduate from UT, move to Midland to start her engineering career, working in remote places like Mentone, Texas (population 22), and move back to Houston where she would take on a new career traveling across the country on a weekly basis. Harry would stay in Austin for graduate school, spend summers working in Houston or Corpus Christi, move to Denver for three weeks, and then settle down in San Antonio. But no matter where life took these two, they couldn’t be kept apart. Quick weekend trips became a staple of their relationship, and vacations to Napa or Jackson Hole with each other’s families were coveted. Whenever life’s challenges came, joy and hope were found knowing they’d be together again soon.
In June 2023, realizing that Kate made him the very best version of himself, Harry planned the greatest ruse of them all. On a weekend Kate believed to be an annual lake weekend with friends, Harry invited Kate to go meet a couple at a bar. Ring in his back pocket, Harry and Kate went down to Lady Bird Lake where Harry walked Kate out to the end of one of the docks, got down on one knee and, to her total surprise, asked Kate for her hand in marriage.
Despite all his geology field courses and labs, it was in Kate that Harry had finally found his rock.
